And now for something a little different. We present to you the Translator Scammers Directory. It’s a free online service that checks if someone contacting you is listed as a scammer. Or you can check if someone is using your identity to scam others.
The directory is a website that provides you with free information about scammers, the kinds of scams, how you can protect yourself, etc. The list comes in two parts and contains information about thousands of scammers. If you know of a scam or a scammer, you can provide your information via email.
You can also check if you show up on that list and try to convince the people running that directory that you are not a scammer. If you read the FAQ on the Translator Scammers Directory page, you will see that the people running the site have a high opinion of themselves. However, I believe that even they can make mistakes ๐

Scammers are real
Don’t think that scammers are something you don’t need to worry about. You have to look on LinkedIn. There are many groups related to translation or localization. And there, you will often find peers who experienced those scammers firsthand. There are different kinds of scammers.
First, you might get in contact with someone who promises a job after a test translation. You translate 5000 words, send it back, and never hear from that person again. You just worked for free and made someone else some money. Tip: Never translate more than maybe 400 words for a test. The second possibility is that someone is using your identity. This is the worst because your reputation is at stake. While you can fix the first problem easily (don’t translate too many words for free), the second is difficult. The Scammers Directory above gives you some ideas on what you can do. It’s worth a read.
