MateCat is a free online CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tool. This means you can use MateCat to translate all your projects for free. But in case you lack time, you also have the option to outsource the translation to Translated.net. With this paid service and enterprise software customization, the makers of MateCat can guarantee that the tool will continue to be free as a translation platform.
Starting your projects is easy, and you can read about the procedure in the Getting Started Guide. All you need is an internet connection and the Chrome or Safari browser. It is recommended that you use a laptop or desktop computer to work with this CAT tool. Smartphones or tablets should only be used to check a job (e.g., for progress) quickly.
Security for translations and translation memories
The following is an excerpt from MateCAT regarding the safety of your work:
To guarantee the confidentiality of your translations, use a private TM when creating your project in MateCat. Make sure that the “Update” checkbox closed to the private TM key is selected. In doing so you can be safe that your translated segments are stored only inside your private TM. Only the person who has created the private TM has access to it (the “owner”) and its content will not be shared with anyone else as opposed to the public TM which is available to all MateCat users. There will still be suggestions from the public TM, but your segments will not be saved in it.
We believe this Online CAT tool is one of the best for free. Therefore, the makers probably put some effort into protecting all contents. However, you should always think twice before uploading files (including TMs and Glossaries). It is probably okay to upload non-confidential files. But you should be careful with everything confidential, especially when it comes to legal documents.
