LingoPad is a free multilingual dictionary for Windows and is available for private and commercial use. As a desktop application, it has the advantage that no Internet connection is needed. Unfortunately, the development of the software directly under Windows has stopped, but it is still running perfectly fine with the latest version of Windows 10. However, a cross-platform version of LingoPad for Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows is planned for the future. There are, of course, a lot of dictionaries available online. However, we do not include online dictionaries on this page. Should you look for an English<>German dictionary, then QuickDic might be something for you.
The LingoPad application comes by default with a German/English dictionary with 230,000 keywords and 670,000 references. Additional languages such as Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Kurdish, Esperanto, Norwegian, and more can be downloaded via online updates. Own word lists can be imported and used in parallel with existing dictionaries.
LingoPad is fully compatible with Unicode and can be used with “right to left” languages. For some languages, the pronunciation of the words as a phonetic transcription (e.g., English and German) or reading (Chinese and Japanese) is offered.
