DeepL Write is a new, free AI writing companion from the company that created the DeepL Translator. If you are a translator, there is a good chance that you already know about this translation tool. You might even use it for daily work, just like I am. Among all the translation tools, DeepL provides me with the best results for the languages I’m working with. But where does DeepL Write fit in? It is not a tool for translating from one language to another. DeepL Write is a tool for improving the written text within one language. As such, it can be compared to Grammarly.
Why Use DeepL Write?
When translating, you want to ensure that the translated text is not only factually correct. You also wish the translated text to be accurate in terms of spelling, grammar, and style. Most translation tools will provide you with text that is spelled correctly. However, there are only so many tools out there that can fulfill the other requirements. The DeepL Translator does not only offer good accurate translations. It also produces output that has proper spelling, grammar, and style.
For this reason, some people have used the DeepL Translator to improve their communication within one language. To do this, you would write or paste your text into the left pane of the tool. Then you would take the translation result from the right pane and paste it into the left pane to translate it back (example: English –> German –> English). So you would have to go through several steps to get your improved text. This is inefficient.
With DeepL Write, you only need to write or paste your text into the left pane. The result will be displayed in the right pane in the same language. This only works in German or English (American or British English). This is because this new tool is still in the beta phase. At a later stage, new languages will be added. Still, this means that DeepL Write already provides more languages than Grammarly.
Which App is better?
Both tools provide excellent output. DeepL Write has the advantage of working in two languages, German and English. Grammarly works only for English. However, currently, Grammarly provides a better analysis for its suggestions. While DeepL only provides different choices, Grammarly also explains why it makes that suggestion. That might be that your text is a bit wordy and could be shortened, or that rephrasing could lead to a better reception by the reader, or that using a synonym for a word might make the text less repetitive. Grammarly also asks in the beginning what the purpose and goal of the text are (business, casual, informative, etc.) and analyses the text accordingly.
For the moment, we would suggest that you test both applications to decide which one is better for you. If you need the tool to improve your German communication, you only have one choice, and that is DeepL Write. For English texts, both applications provide excellent output, but Grammarly provides better analysis. But we are sure that DeepL Write will quickly improve on that level as well and, once it is out of its Beta stage, prove that it is a worthy competitor.
